Masquerade Read-Along Week 1!

Hiiii, everyone! :)

Even though I've been around the blogosphere for a little over a year now, this is my very first read-along so I'm really excited! Especially that it's for Masquerade by Cambria Hebert because she's such an awesome author, and I'm loving her book so far!

This read-along is hosted by Heidi @ Rainy Day Ramblings, Steph @ Five Alarm Book Reviews, Candace @ Candace's Book Blog,  Veronica @ Mostly Reviews and Cambria Hebert. I don't think it's too late to sign up, so go ahead and jump in for next week if you want! :)

This wee is hosted by Steph @ Five Alarm Book Reviews

Chapters 1 - 8

1. If you were disfigured like Heven (by some sort of accident) do you think you would have reacted the same way as her? (loss of self confidence, hiding yourself, etc)

Oh! I don't think I can really say for sure because everything always feels different when you're actually in the situation rather than reading about it.

But I'd like to think... that I wouldn't have lost confidence in myself. Since I was a pretty clutzy kid (okay, so a really clutzy kid), I have tons of scars on my arms and legs. And even though they aren't nearly as bad as Heven's, they don't bother me as much as they'd bother my mom or sister. I like to think I'd remain the same person I am now even if they were as bad as hers spunky and strange and smiley! :)

It was nothing to be embarrassed about; it wasn't Heven's fault that she had those scars. As long as I'd have awesome friends like Kimber sticking by me, I think I could get by okay!

2. Do you think that Kimber’s plan for revenge against Cole (for kissing another girl) is a good idea?

Definitely not! Revenge is fun to read about sometimes and I have to admit to loving the TV show, Revenge LOL but I'm not really a revenge person myself. (I can't hold a grudge long enough to get revenge for the life of me!) As soon as Kimber decided to get back at Cole by making him jealous, I wished I was in the book so I could tell her not to.

Making a boy who loves you jealous... usually doesn't end well. x)

3. In the beginning chapters, Heven is very drawn to Sam but won’t admit it due to her own insecurities. Kimber begins to “date” Sam… do you think that Heven should have spoken up? Do think Kimber should have seen Heven’s real feelings?

In Heven's position, I honestly don't know what I would've done because I'm really bad at sorting out that kind of stuff. It's hard for me to see the line between "I'm totally crushing on that guy!" and "Oh my gosh, he is SO hot!" LOL x)

I guess it might've been hard for Heven to say something since Kimber set her sights on Sam from the beginning and she didn't want to be a bad friend. But since they were friends, Heven should've mentioned something anyways because that's what friends do. And Kimber should've noticed how her friend was about the situation.

4. Masquerade is broken in four separate POV’s: Heven, Sam, The Hate and The Hope. Do you think having multiple POV’s adds depth to the story? Why or why not?

When they're done right, I love multiple POV's so of course my answer is going to be yes! ;) We haven't read much of Sam's POV up to chapter 8 yet, but I love reading Heven's because she's really sweet and realistic. And I love how The Hate and The Hope are like back to back opposites. One says, "I like pizza," and the other says, "I hate pizza." Those lines aren't in the book but it's a lot like that LOL, which is pretty cool to read. :)

5. A great source of strength for Heven is her grandmother. Who do you think yours is/would be?

If we were talking about people, a great source of strength for me would definitely be my older sister. I love her like crazy! She's always the first person I go to if I need help with something, just like I'm always the first person she goes to when she needs help too. We may not be all that similar (for example, she doesn't like to read), but she's kind of like the yin to my yang. I don't think I would've survived so many things without her!

If we were talking about things... I'd have to say books! In a way, books DO help make you stronger because you learn so much from them. And they're a nice escape from reality too when things aren't going as well as you'd hope. Reading a novel can be like therapy for a bookworm's heart, if that doesn't sound too cheesy LOL. ;)

And that's it! :) If you've read this book before, I would LOVE to know what you thought. But if you haven't read it yet, I'd love to know what you thought of these questions & answers anyways!

Have an amazing day, you guys!

  6. I LOVE your answers Mimi! They definitely make me want to read Masquerade, it sounds incredibly great. I love a good story with a crush worthy boy!

We have the same source of strengths. My older sister is someone I always go to for help, she's honestly my best friend in the whole world. We actually share a love for books, so it's always nice to be able to ramble about our current favorites together.

Thank you for sharing Mimi - you make read alongs sound like a blast! Have a great day! <3<3<3

  8. Yeah Mimi so glad you are on board. Read alongs are addicting. I am glad you are liking Masquerade. I love your answer about being a klutz. Also, I am a big sister and my brother and sister are my best friends. We used to go everywhere together as kids. Friends will come and fo but family will always be there. They are truly your best friends. Have a great weekend Mimi :)

  9. Oh, how fun! I definitely want to participate in one of these read along in the future. Seems so fun!

In my case, I think I would have been very self-conscious about the scars. But as long as there are someone to love me for who I am, I don't think I'd have changed -- or that's what I think! Hahahah Mimi, I'm also VERY CLUMSY. Seriously. Now it's getting better, though, and luckily I didn't get any serious scars nor broke anything.

Totally agree with you! Revenge, independently of how you look at it, is never good. And if they were friends, I also think she should have told her.

Various PVs! Well, that's interesting. If it's well done, I love hearing different narration voices. It adds a lot of depth to the story! And you get to know the other characters as well. My source of strength would be my twin sister. Without a doubt. I'm not complete if I'm not with her. She's my favorite person in the world.

It was great reading your opinion about this questions :)
You too have an amazing day, Mimi! ♥

  10. Oh my goodness I am on the phone with my LBS literally right now to see if they have it in stock. I don't think that I'll actually be able to join in on the read a long but I'm there in spirit! ;)

On a side note, Mimi - you will have to let me know what you think of This is Not a Test when you read it. Seriously! :D

  11. I like to think I wouldn't lose confidence in myself either, but you're totally right Mimi that it's hard to say with any certainty when I'm currently not on the receiving end of stares and whispers. I couldn't help but wonder if Heven just stopped trying to hide her face if all the not-so subtle points and stares would have tapered off because they would know had no outward effect on her. Obviously easier said than done though!

  12. Ahhh a klutz eh?? LOL. I'm not really klutzy but I am spacy.... he he he. I tend to space out and kind of go off into my own little world.

Having a sister must be awesome! I am an only child but I think having someone know you really well (like a sister would) and be close your age would be like having a built in friend! how fabulous. And I totally agree that books can make you stronger! I have definitely learned a lot from books that I have read. GREAT answers!!!!

  13. i agree about the Kimber seeing Sam first thing. She might have been a bit put out when she was like 'wow he's hot!' and then Heven says 'I like him, hands off!' especially when Heven wasn't going to do anything about it!

  14. Agreed, it usually doesn't end well with revenge, but then again.... LOL!

YES! My older sister is who I go to and she does the same and in those situations where I really don't want to talk to anyone, I turn to books. It's just that them seem to focus my attention elsewhere and let me calm down enough to focus on the situation in a calm manner. I think that's very important!!

  15. "spunky and strange and smiley!"

YES! Have I told you how much I admire your personality and charm?! As for myself, I'm so shy and nervous as it is, so I'd probably have a hard time dealing.

And you talking about your sister warms my heart. I'm the oldest of six girls, and I hope my sisters say the same things about me. :)

  16. Awe, I always wanted a sister like that. My sister is younger than my oldest child, so we are not close like that.

  17. I can wait to find out more about Hope & Hate and Heven's role in it.

  19. I am covered in scars too. I was also a very very very clumsy kid, still am sometimes and they don't bother me at all. I am so proud of all of them. I really loved the last part of your 5th answer about books, totally true!

  20. Glad you're part of the read-along! Yeah, my scars just don't bother me, and it doesn't bother me if people freak out about them - I think it's funny. lol

Awww that's so sweet you and your sister have such a strong bond <3 And I LOVE your answer about books, it is SO not cheesy at all. I think most of us feel exactly the same way :)
