Book News: Half-Blood

2011 has to be the most exciting year for so many awesome debut books, and Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout is one of them! I can't even tell you how excited I am for this book! After reading the prequel novella Daimon, and the first and third chapters of Half-Blood, I have to say I'm in another book crush! :)

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure-bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.  

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Book News: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

I can't be any more excited about this book! The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin comes out this September on the 27th, a nice eleven days before my birthday, and I wanted to get you just as pumped! :)

Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

MY THOUGHTS:

I picked up this book because the whole premise was breathtaking. A world where love was a disease? How amazing does that sound? And I adored it!

Lena was a great and realistic character. She was far from perfect, but watching her grow throughout the story was one of the things that makes this story so great. And her relationship with Alex — absolutely gorgeous and swoon-worthy Alex — was as raw and beautiful as first love should be.

Lauren Oliver's beautiful writing style captured me from the very first page. Sometimes I just wanted to jump up and down to hurry to the good parts but I'm glad I stuck through it, because Delirium was absolutely and beautifully amazing. And in those last few pages, I swear I only took one breath.

In conclusion, I loved Delirium! I'm anxiously awaiting for the next book, Pandemonium, to come out!  

BUY or BORROW?: If you have a growing collection of dystopian YA novels on your bookshelf (like me!), this is definitely one you need to add to the list! :)

MY THOUGHTS: 

What can I say about this book except that I loved it just as much as If I Stay, if not more? Ever since I found out that there would be a sequel to the novel that won the award for the "Book That Made Mimi Cry Like a Baby" of the year, I had to run off to the bookstore in the first week it came out. And needless to say, I was not disappointed! 

Told from Adam's point of view, Where She Went still has the beautiful prose similar to the first book. That they're both musicians may have a play in that, or maybe it's because Forman is an absolute genius at creating characters that are impossible to hate. 

Everything they feel, you feel. When they cry, you cry. When you get even a taste of how much Adam loves Mia, you melt into a puddle and fear that you will never be able to be put together again.

I don't want to spoil this for anyone who hasn't read the book yet, but I'll tell you this: I loved it. Every little piece of it, I loved. Not unlike the first book, the little bits and pieces of the past thrown in perfectly have a large impact on the present. You'll find yourself falling for Adam all over again. 

You will love Where She Went — guaranteed! If you haven't read this amazing duo of touching books yet, then I recommend you start! Gayle Forman has a talent for crafting the most amazing stories. 

BUY or BORROW?: Buy it! Buy it! Not only is the cover beautiful, but this is a book that you'll want to read again after a terrible break-up :)

MY THOUGHTS: 

I can't even express how much I loved this book! It's just one of those stories you can't put down once you start and can't stop thinking about once you finish. Mia's story is absolutely incredible and touching and so sad that I cried several times.

Forman creates the novel beautifully, following Mia through one miraculous day where she has to decide whether she wants to stay alive or not after a terrible accident that takes out her family. Mia is such a strong and amazing character that I adore from beginning to end.

And I loved Adam — cool, rocker boyfriend Adam who does everything in his power to get himself into the Extensive Care section of the hospital where Mia's body lies. He may be far from perfect, but every moment that we see him through Mia's eyes makes us fall for him too.

Beautifully written and crafted, a perfect mixture of the present and memories of the past, If I Stay is definitely a book that I recommend to everyone! Five out of five stars, no question about it!

MY THOUGHTS: 

Can I just start by saying how much I love this series? It has everything you could ever want in an amazing series and more! The Mortal Instruments series is undoubtedly one of my favourites of all time!

Like the first three books in the series, City of Fallen Angels starts off pretty quick. It dives straight into the action but that doesn't mean it confuses you like many other books do with introductions. Cassie Clare makes sure you're familiar with the Shadowhunter world before getting straight to the brutal point.

And it was amazing! With the amount of detail in this book, you'd think that Cassie Clare planned to have a whole spin off series when she wrote the original trilogy because everything fit perfectly into place. I adored all of the characters — new and old — and I can barely wait until the next installments come out! 

Even though I felt like it didn't quite live up to its predecessors (although, considering how high the bar was set, I don't exactly blame it!), it was still amazingly intense and breathtaking. This series is home to one of my favourites casts and worlds of all time!  

In short, I loved City of Fallen Angels! If you haven't read this book yet (or started this series at all!) then I recommend you go to the bookstore right now and blow your live savings! It'll be worth it! ;)
