Review: The Scorpio Races

Book: The Scorpio Races
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Release Date: October 18, 2011
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Pages: 404
Source: bookstore
Stars: 5/5
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

MY THOUGHTS:

Guys. GUYS. Words will not describe how much I loved this book (because, unlike Maggie Stiefvater, I'm not a lyrical genius)! The Scorpio Races is definitely one of the most beautiful and breathtaking and original novels I've ever read, and I can't believe I ever had any doubts!

Maggie is such a talented writer, and she brings everything to life: the magical yet deadly water horses, the small yet beautiful island of Thisby, and just about everything else. The whole idea of the races was brilliant and perfectly executed. I didn't dislike one thing!

And the characters where do I even start?? The whole cast was awesome, but I just LOVED Kate (nicknamed Puck) with her short temper, attitude, and undeniable strength, and Sean was a man of few words but he definitely made my list of Boys I Wish Were Real!

I also loved everything about the romance in this book. It wasn't the main focus at all so unlike The Wolves of Mercy Falls series but it was magical and realistic and beautiful and, in my opinion, just perfect! They didn't love each other instantaneously, and made it feel all the more real. Maggie made it so easy to see why these characters cared about each other.

In short, The Scorpio Races is a MUST-READ book! Everything about it was brilliant and magical and beautiful. And the hopeful ending made it a perfect standalone, although I wouldn't complain at all if Maggie decided to make this a series! ;)

BUY or BORROW?: You absolutely do not want to miss out on the opportunity to own this book! Buy it for sure!

YAY MIMI!!! I couldn't have put that better myself, I just adored Puck and Sean and how quiet their relationship was but intense at the same time. That doesn't make any sense unless you've read the book I don't think:) This is definitely a new all time favorite of mine:)

  5. My heart is swooning over the way you've described the subtle romance. You are a lyrical genius!

Slow building romances are my fav, so I'll have to check this one out just for that.

  7. Mimi!! I am so glad you loved it dear!! I love your review! and I totally agree that Maggie is such a lyrical genius! She definitely makes it hard for us (readers)when we want to express how much we like this book. Whatever we say will never be eloquent enough to to demonstrate how good this book is!

  8. I SO want to read this (but I have a stack of review books I feel I should get through first). I'm already imagining the romance, just based on the tidbits you provided because after the Wolves of Mercy Falls, I implicitly trust Stiefvater to make me happy!

  9. Oh my GOODNESS! I'm so excited for Scorpio Races I literally have goosebumps!

Maggie's writing is amazing, huh? It was gorgeous and lyrical in Mercy Falls, but everyone keeps saying it over and over, so this book must be AMAZING. My copy just arrived in the mail this morning. Can't wait!!

  13. Soooo glad you loved this one!!! I'm a big fan of Maggie Stiefvater (who isn't?!?!?) but I was a bit wary to start this book cause it doesn't sound like my kinda read. Kate totally sounds like an older version of me! And Sean *sighs* I'll pick this book up just for him!

Now I NEED to pick this one up ASAP!!! I can't believe you didn't dislike a single thing. Now I KNOW I'm gonna love it. Great review...as usual :)
