Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. Each day she goes to school like a normal teenager, and each night she must swim, or the pain will be unbearable. She is a siren - a deadly mermaid destined to lure men to their watery deaths. After a terrible tragedy, Lexi shut herself off from the world, vowing to protect the ones she loves. But she soon finds herself caught between a new boy at school who may have the power to melt her icy exterior, and a handsome water spirit who says he can break Lexi's curse if she gives up everything else. Lexi is faced with the hardest decision she's ever had to make: the life she's always longed for - or the love she can't live without?

MY THOUGHTS:

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this novel (because I've hardly read any books that are about sirens), but I ended up adoring Ripple! Mandy Hubbard takes what little I know about these supernatural creatures and twists it into something beautiful and romantic and utterly compelling.

Lexi is such a heartbreaking character. Having a deceased mother and no father, she only finds out that she's a siren on her sixteenth birthday when she accidentally kills the boy she loves. It's so easy to connect with her feelings because the prose is so beautiful and, well, she's just a super sweet girl!

Then there's Cole (insert lots of swooning), who somehow manages to break through her shield to keep everyone out. And Erik, the new boy at school who comes with a way to break the curse... at the price of something Lexi can't bear to give up. It's not like most love triangles out there because there's a huge twist thrown right in the middle that makes you want kick a box!

Hopefully an empty box so it can go farther when you hit it.

Brilliantly written and executed, Ripple is a siren novel that I can bet isn't like any other siren novel out there! I'm glad that this is a standalone novel (since we're in the age of trilogies and hair-pulling cliffhangers), but I wouldn't mind if Mandy Hubbard wrote a sequel! *wink wink nudge nudge*

BUY or BORROW?: Definitely a buy! Especially if you love novels about sirens, or want to start your collection right now! :)

  1. Nice to hear that this one is a standalone! So many books nowadays are part of trilogies and drawn-out series, so I always look forward to some change. Wow, it sounds like a really interesting idea to this one, and I wonder how it all plays out. Haha, can't wait to read about what makes you want to kick a box :p Great review!

  5. I didn't know this was out! Nor did I know it was about sirens but I had immediate cover lust because of that gorgeous dress! I'm also really glad to know that this is a standalone (!) and basically I just put this on hold at the library because I'm so excited about reading it now. Thank you for sparking my interest!

  6. I was seriously JUST looking at a siren book at B&N, contemplating getting it. But maybe I'll try this one out instead. What is up with the guy on the cover, though? Seriously, what is he wearing? He's dressed like a 40-year-old accountant. Great review!

  8. Wow, sounds awesome. I haven't read a book about sirens, so I think this will be the first one. :) And yay, for being a stand alone book. I didn't knew that. I thought it was part of a series. Great review.

  9. Hi Mimi!

*waves like crazy* Loved your review! It's great that it's a stand alone novel and what a way to start a book off. She kills her boyfriend? That freaking sucks. Might have to give this book a try.

    Have a great weekend :)
